I have a 1983 - 4.5 HP Evinrude. I would like to know what the compression on this motor should be. It seems to run fine but I think it smokes a little too much. Both cylinders check at 95 lbs. I have an actual Evinrude service manual for the motor but it does not come out and tell you what the compression should be. Thanks for your help.

95 does not seem to be too bad. 100 or above would be better, but the fact that they are the same is very good. Remember that smoking on a two cycle is not the same cause as a car engine. Your outboard burns oil as a normal part of operation. Make sure that the oil mix is correct. Some brands of oil smoke more than others. Try different brands.

For one of those little 4.5s, 95psi is actually very good. In my experience, they (and their 4hp siblings) will run well all the way down around 80psi.<br />- Scott
