1983 4 hp Evinrude Impeller

I am changing the impeller on my 4hp evinrude. Where do I disconnect the linkage for the gear selector? If you have a diagram, that would be great. I am a shade tree mechanic.

Most likely you just remove the bolts holding the lower unit and it will drop down an inch and you will see a slotted bolt that you remove to disengage the shift rod.

This turned out to be too easy. There is no retaining bolt. The linkage just slides into the lower unit. I wish all of my problems were this easy.

Well that explains why I couldn't understan the parts diagram. What causes it from just slipping out when the rod goes up? Rick.

Thats a real good question, unfortunately I don't know the answer. I took off the two bolts that hold the lower unit, and then gave it a slight tug and the lower unit came off. When I put it back together I had to use a little finesse (not my strong suit) to get the linkage and exhaust tube to slide back in but eventually it did and I bolted the lower unit back to the mid section. It runs and shifts perfectly.

hi,you have the same engine as mine i think,im have a problem finding the right impeller,iv looked every were i think,i took mine out to put one back but this one had a steel nut in the middle and a round pin,the one that came had a square key,no one knows what impeller i have,was yours the same and if so were did you get the new one from,matt

Hi all! I would appreciate anyones help......I bought a 3 HP 1967 model#3706 c Evinrude motor.And I want to replace the impeller...can anyone give me the basics on how to do it or tell me where I can get a diagram showing this procedure? I have been a auto mechanic for years now retired but Marine engines is very new to me.....I really dont want to buy a manual for it..this is just a back up (emergency motor) in case my 120 Chysler engine takes a dump on me out on the lake! LOL thanks Chuck
