I just recently had a boat given to me. It is a 1983 Evinrude with a 50 HP. The first thing I did to the motor was replace the water pump because it was not working. After running it up and down the lake, it was missing and the engine kept going dead. So next I checked the compression, and had 120 psi in the top cylinder and 60 psi in the lower cylinder (very low I'm assuming). So then I pulled the head and found a blown head gasket. This is where I'm at now. I found that the bottom cylinder has some scorched spots. Is this something major, or can I just put another head gasket on and hope it will run fine? I'm also having the head resurfaced because it was warped a little. With these problems, Is there anything else I need to check? Also Is the low compression due to the blown head gasket?

Any motor that has benn sitting for more than a couple of months needs the carburators cleaned and overhauled. My be too late in your case. <br />Put a new head gasket on it and see what your compression is.

Sorry I didn't mention it earlier, but yes the motor had been sitting for little over a year. I did clean the carburators before I replaced the water pump.
