I recently purchased a 15 ft flats boat with a "bad" 1983-4ish mercury 4cy 50 hp motor. I replaced the starter, plugs, cleaned the carbs, fixed the 10 broken bolt/leaks on the water jackets and replaced the fuel. With all of this I was able to get it running. When I put it in the water it took about 30 minutes at idle to finally get it to kick up enough rpms to get on a plane. I ran it for about an hour on plane @5200 rpms. The next day I tried to run it again and now I am only getting 4000 and doesn't want to plane out. Is this a fuel pump or timing issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also have a 1983 50 HP Mercury oytboard and experience the same "Top-End Power" problem. I must let my engine warm up for anywhere from 10-20 minutes before I get full power and get boat on plane. I too would like to know what can be done to fix this problem. It always does get better so the problem is not horrible, just very annoying.

I just had my 83 50HP Mercury engine problem fixed. The engine was running only on 2 cylinders. The problem included a rotted "trigger wire," new stator and switchbox. The original 83 stator was recalled ane the new replacement has a fix. Power is now restored from cold engine start and runs great!

Hope this helps.
