hey guys
my general consensus is this motor is junk-BUT!! i had an overheat alarm at troll speeds after 15-20minutes or so. took it to a marine mechanic- he says compression is 125 on all cylinders but needs impeller change-i am new to boating-got the alarm second trip out after buying this boat private sale- 1983 bayliner capri 16ft- went 44mph bombing around-thoughts on this boat-just scares me that something happened right off the bat-should i fix impeller and dump boat for something else-or is this boat ok to run without fear of breaking down every other day??? you guys are the gods of boating-don't let me down :D thanks!!!

need to get hold of a manual and replace the impeller -- sounds like you have a strong engine (good compression -- good top end speed), but just need to do some maintenance.

Compression is a lower end of acceptability. You yourself can do a decarbonization treatment once a year.

As I understand it you have a bad combination of boat and motor. Both should be considered below average quality(reliability) entry level products.Boat is notorious for rotting floors and transoms.Im sure that would depend on type of care it has recieved.Look it over pretty carefully for soft spots or wobbley transom.Engine was in my opinion
5 or 10 years behind the times when it was built.
I sure wouldnt put big money into it.If the boat seems to be in pretty good shape you could trade up to a newer more sofisticated motor you would probably get better milage and performance
from same hp. Good luck.
