That water pump drive shaft seal is redundant. The impeller rides against the top of the water pump casting and very little water will get past it to the seal. There is no O ring seal at the top of the drive shaft. If you intend using the engine a lot, the crankshaft, being hardened steel, can rust in the splines cold welding the drive shaft in place--even though it is stainless. Thus: You will want to lightly grease or use anti-seize on the drive shaft splines.--Again, A LIGHT COAT. Too much will pre-load the drive shaft, driving it too far into the lower unit.

I was thinking the impeller might "seal" it in a sense when it is in place. Thanks for the info.

Changed all the seals except for the shift rod seal b/c I am unsure how to remove the rod. I do know Frank Acampora did say to screw in an appropriate size screw to get it out. But my question is how do I remove the rod. I saw that there is a wire like cotter pin on the rod. After removing that and the pin, the rod still did not come out. I ran the engine on the water yesterday, and noted that same oily residue running down the side of the lower unit. Opened it up to see that there was a small puddle of chocolate milk like fluid that accumulated around the shift rod...
