Recently I had problems with my engine not cutting off with neither the key or the kill switch. I did some reading and replaced the power pack. This seemed to have worked. motor cut on and off with both key and kill switch everytime. However I took it out for the first time today (I just bought it) and after getting on the water and turning the motor on and off several times with no problems it then started not working again. Anyone have suggestions as to whether I blew the power pack or something else to check.

Also, the motor cranks right up. Idle and reverse are perfect however when I start to excel in forward around half speed the motor bucks or jerks (sounds like I hit a log) that happens about every 10 seconds exact. The faster I go past half speed the louder the buck is. I have read could the dog clutch or shift rod? Any ideas. I just replaced the water pump and foot seal but did not take the snap ring or anything after the snap ring or gears out. can post a video of motor doing this if will help.

Thanks!

Ok will do that! Any idea what I check for to see if it is? Any idea also if that would cause power pack to go bad?

Two completely unrelated situations. Shifting/clutch dog has absolutely no relationship with the power pack.

It is my understanding that any stray voltage whatsoever applied to the black/yellow kill wire will damage the power pack.

What kind of shape are the wires in? The wires that go from stator to pack and to coils and such? I find many of these 80's era motors had insulation on the wires that just doesn't hold up to time

burned up 2 packs once because of short in wires or key switch, when i turned off key shorted p-pack out, solution - disconnected black/yellow wire, to shut motor off , just pushed key in, chocked it off, ran that way for years
