hey guys, i just purchased a 16ft bayliner capri bowrider w/85hp force ob-external fuel tanks-took it out yesterday( the boat flies-2 larger adults and one large child) getting 43mph at speedo-but when i troll at slower speeds (like for fishing) after about 5 minutes i get a fume alarm-is this normal and i shouldn't be trolling with the 85hp?? also i have a 6.5 gallon fuel tank mixed at 50:1-what should my consumption be?? it seems like i used 2-3 gallons in a hour and a half of bombing around full throttle with the occasional trolling?? thanks for any help

Your fuel consumption seems ok. Im guessing youve got a little fuel leaking somewhere, hose connection, cracked hose, gascap doesnt show when moving fast as fumes disperse faster.Dont know where your senser is ,if under cowl there may be a leak there. Sorry I cant be more specific Im just trying to use a little logic.
Good luck, Spike

more info here-the alarm sounds from up near the key/ignition area-maybe a hot engine alarm also?? is trolling with this big a motor something i should not be doing?? maybe using a kicker motor instead?? my wife thinks she is smelling fumes at slow speeds-what about the vents on the tanks?? positions of vents?? wont you smell some fumes due to two stroke engine?? just want to be safe here-we are new to boating-how would i look for leaks around the engine?? thanks

Way is right, I think. These boats did not come with a fume alarm, as most outboards don't.
Unless it was installed after the boat was purchased, what you are hearing is the dreaded "WATER TEMP" alarm.
It's time to change the impeller, thermostat, and do a compression test. They do not run long after those alarms go off, without doing some perminent damage to the cylinders, pistons, heads ect.
The impeller should be changed-out every other season as a precaution that that alarm is never heard.
It should be considered a "normal wear" item, like plugs are.
I hope you cuaght her in time. Good luck.

If the previous owner let it sit all year, don't be too worried about being lied to. Sometimes when these motors sit, they tend to form a "shape" the the pump housing ,which is concentric.
It will cost about 200buks for the repairs...
Or about 30bukz, a shop manual,an average set of tools, and about 2 hours time.
It will then take about 1 hour any time in the future to do this same job.

Trolling is kind of rough on them. The carbon buils-up rapidy, and the impeller wears out much faster . This is because it is in contact with the pump housing walls all the time,as opposed to high-speed,when the vanes tuck-in, and it acts like a centrifugal pump.

So, decarb often, and keep a spare impeller.

thanks 12footer, so now that i have gotten the alarm even at the slow trolling speeds means i should change the impeller?? and is this a motor where i can find a manual?? its an 83 force with chrysler logo-where would i get the manual?? it ran great like i said 42mph.. so i am hoping no engine damage... what do you think??? thanks for the help-i am somewhat mechanically inclined-should i try this or hire it out???
