Hello everyone, i own an 83 johnson 115 long shaft but am in need of a xl shaft. I have contacted bay manufacturing and they want $720 for the extension kit which seems outrageous but i know the acronym for boat so if i have to i have to. Just so happens that i have found a local 1985 235hp johnson outboard xl shaft with a bad motor for far less then what bay wants for a 5" extension. From the photos that i have seen of the 235 the lower unit looks almost identical other then some very small differences in the vent plate. The midsection houseing has the same shape atleast from photos and all the lower unit seems to have same angles ect. ect. since from what i have found out they are from the same generation of outboards. Looking on iboats parts the diagrams of the lowers they look almost identical but the part numbers are different and they are not in the list of interchangeable parts with one another but that could be just because the bigger motor is in a bigger hp class and most parts on the engine will not swap but i do not know. i cannot find info on the shaft splines or if its possible.
Basically, in the short, does anybody know if it is possible to swap the xl shaft, housing, lower unit from the 235 onto my 115.
or at the very least does anyone know of a cheaper 5" extension, the only company i know of that makes extensions is bay.
