Hi all, I recently purchased a 1966 Starcraft Jupiter that came with a 1983 Johnson 60 HP twin. It runs great but needs a starter, has anyone used DB Electric for starters/alternators? They have a decent price, just want to check they're reputation before purchasing anything. Second issue is part of the skeg is broken off, can this be fab'd up and welded on successfully? Thanks in advance!:)

There customer service was excellent as i bought a lawnmower starter that didn`t work and they immediately sent me a new one, no questions asked. The starter motor worked great but after about a year the plastic teeth stripped off. Motor still works good. I don`t know if they use plastic on the boat starters as i think they would be metal for the higher torque application.

Don't replace that starter before you service the wires/cables. Hidden corrosion in the connections cause many good starters to be replaced.

Agree with JB above, so many have been needlessly changed. Polish those connections to a shine, including main ground. Voltage drop testing will help determine if there are faulty sections of wire. Also be certain that your battery is fully charged and load tested.

If you are certain you are getting the full 12.54 volts at the starter and she is still not functioning as she should, they are usually rebuildable for much less than new as well. Bring it to your local starter/alternator repair shop, might be something simple.
