Nearly two months ago I purchased a 1983 7.5 Sail Master (Johnson) Model: J8SRLCTA. I know nothing about this outboard except that it pulls to start very easily, almost like it has no compression. It runs really good when started, but is very difficult to start, needing many pulls. It restarts very good, on the first or second pull, if it hasn't been sitting idle/stopped for more then a couple hours. We tried new spark plugs, but still have the same problem. This outboard also has a lengthly electrical cable coming out of it. Is this a generator cable to recharge a battery? I was told that the impeller should be changed, but I can't find any information as to what part number would be for the impeller or for a water pump kit. What other year/years or horse power can be used for any necessary replacement parts when needed? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Have you had a compression test done? Low compression will certainly make it hard to start. Ideally, you'd like that motor to have 85psi minimum in each hole, and within 5% of each other.

The cable is indeed part of a low amperage charging system, maybe about 4-6 amps if memory serves. It won't charge a dead battery, but it can maintain a battery (12V) for running lights, etc. in a light duty application. If you've got stereo, TV, DVD player, etc. it probably won't be enough.

- Scott
