Hello all, i got an incredible deal yesterday from a guy who wanted to get some mercury motors out of his moms backyard that he had bought as projects. a 1983 mercury v6 150 hp ( that he thought was a 1977) that was missing the flywheel but had the controls and power trim setup,no other info, a 1961 merc 400 that " missed and only would run with the choke on" and a 1971 mercury 500 that "sank with his boat the first day out". i got the 150 in hopes that it would be rebuildable to replace my 1976 v1750 that has 3 holes in the block (different story, look it up in here) bought it for $75 and he through in the other 2 for free! I didnt think the cylinders would be good on the 150 but for $75 it was worth the risk
i put my 175's flywheel on it, took the heads off and checked the cylinders... 1,2,5,6 were great still had cross hatchings, 3 and 4 had minor scratches but what worries me it that on 3 they are at the 3 oclock position looking down the cylinder and on 4 they are at the 9 oclock position. is this something to worry about or is it normal wear. the shaft turns easily enough. doesnt seem to be bent or anything. havent checked compression yet (need to build me a stand for it) but spinning the flywheel gives me the swoosh sound when pistions clear the ports. what do you guys think?
