Does anyone know if I can drop the lower unit (foot) on my 83' OMC V6 (3.8L) without taking the whole drive off? The gear oil is drained but I don't want to take the whole thing off if I don't have to.

I try to remove the whole Unit. and the Shift Cable is in my way..
so i was thinking if i remove the lower unit i was able to remove the shift cable that is bolt in . i will be able to remove the whole UNIT

I have read the instruction and have problem following the direction..

I have remove all the Lower Unit Bolt and Spray it with W40 To lubricate it.

I want to replace the water Pump.

Disconnect the shift cable at the converter box, remove the retainer clip on the outside of the intermediate housing, loosen up the cable in the passageway thru the IH and remove the whole drive. It is a lot easier that way.

It can be done that way. If you know what you are doing it saves about 1/2 the time. If you have never done it before it can get very frustrating laying on your back trying to get the pump housing lined up right while holding a flashlite in your teeth and getting the gooey bolts put back in place. (It only goes one way).

The shift cable comes out form the converter box. you cant disconnect it the way you are hoping. But you can drop the bottom and reach inside to do the pump. (now see above).

I would take some of the $600.00 bucks you saved on the other job and buy the proper gasket. They're not too spendy and will save you a bunch more $$ in the long run!!!
