1983 searay charging low

hi guys long time, well i have a 1983 searay 210 fisherman with 350 chevy 260 horsepower. i did not charge the batterys this past winter, when i turn the key it just start so i figure i dont have to charge the battery. it runs good for the first two outing, now i notice it is not charging properly, in one word , when the boat is in nutral it charge at 13.5 when i put load on it the guage drop to 12 and the batteries seems to be dieing. i took both batteries to charge one was no good so i bought a new one. same thing, low charging. i put a new altinator same thing. what could be the problem, ???? is it safe to disconnect the battery when the engine is runing??<br /><br />thanks for any input on this.<br /> god bless<br /><br /><br />bolo

Well at least we know why you're not charging. NO it isn't safe to disconnect the battery while the motor is running. You fried the diodes in the alternator. Sorry! But at least they can be replaced. You won't need another new alternator if you can just get those replaced.

They are inside the alternator. You would have to remove it from your engine and split the alternator casing to get at them.

You can get most alternator repair shops to check and repair your alternator for $50 dollars if you make a few phone calls. Almost the same price as you buying the kit.

thanks guys for all the suport, i brought back the altinator to the marine supply store i bought it, they gave me a new one we install it , and it is doing the same thing. when at nutral it read 13 volts if i took it for a ride its read 12 volt what could be the problem?? fuse , wires loose, grounds <br /><br />thanks again

Does this boat have a Voltage Regulator ???????<br />Or is it built into the Alt. ??????

its built on the back of altinator <br /> <br />ok when i put the volt tester on both battery with the engine of they both read 12 + volt, but if i try start the engine on one battery some time it dont want to start and less i put the battery switch on both. is that a clue telling me one battery is no good.??
