i have a 1984 omc engine which i know to be the 229 chev engine......the block is cracked and im ready to change it with another short block...what i want to know is there any difference with the internals (re.crank, cam, pistons)..with the omc engine and the regular automotive engine....will a rebuilt automotive engine be tough enought like the marine engine..
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes the are auto engines in marine use with a few slight differances. the cam and gaskets being the big ones. A 229 cid might be a little hard to find, I think a early model 4.3l will go right into its place. same maifolds and all.

If this has been a raw salt water cooled engine the heads might be about junk, most of the chevy heads rot out on the spark plug cooler area into the fire ring and dump raw water on top of the pistons.

Marine engines use brass freeze plugs. Regular freeze plugs will pop out.

regular freeze plugs will rust out if raw water cooled as will head gasket.
