I bought a used 1984 Johnson J15RCRM Vin#E5898399.
Cleaned carb out and everything ran great. Tiller cog?gears are shot where tiller connects to the motor and the bolt that connects the tiller to engine was reamed off so I had to cut the bolt to remove it. Looks like a pin goes through the cog. Ideas on replacements? Clymer book did not have a clue.
Also working on 1963 Johnson 10 HP Need to replace needle valve and packing. Ideas on parts.Or replacement carb? This motor always cranks on the 1st pull and outruns the 15 HP when it works.

JSheff

On the '84 15 HP, the tiller gears were a weakness on this motor. If the tiller was lifted and you tried to turn the throttle, you were likely to strip the gears. The good news is that they are still available. 390680 is the part number for the tiller handle gear and shaft asembly and 389720 is gear and bushing asembly behind it. That turns the vertical control shaft gear 319035. the tiller handle bolt is 318977. This is an easy job. If you don't have an OMC manual, just watch how you take it apart and put it back together the same way. BTW, the OMC manuals are much clearer on all this.

For the 10hp, Iboats sells carb rebuild kits. But the OEM (Bombardier) kit comes with a new float which replaces the old style cork ones. The old cork ones will somtimes sink in todays gasoline. It attacks the sealant on the float.
Forget about a replacement carb. If you do find an old one, it'll need rebuilding. Fortunetly, rebuilding one of these carbs is pretty easy.

Iboats aftermarket carb rebuild kit PN 18-7043
Bombardier carb rebuild kit PN439071

You will have to check around for replacement needles. They are around. How ever unless yours is missing, broken or totaly shot you may still be able to use it.I have run some pretty rough needles with better than fair to great results. This is one of those if you don't have to, then don't things. You might try smoothing the tapper with some emery cloth (use your fingers to spin the needle), possibly a small fine file. The thing to remember is if it don't work now, you have nothing to loose, if you take your time, work slow, you might suprize yourself.

I successfully remachined my needles, both were worn from being screwed in too tightly, I just put them in the lathe and skimmed a bit off 'till they had smooth tapers again.
