I have a starting problem with my 150 mercury when cold.....It will crank but will not start for long time...like 15 min of trying before it start. If I use the boat everyday than the starting seem to be ok but if it sit for two days or more ..that when I have the hard starting. When I start I prime the bulb and is firm and tight....I hit the choke for ten seconds and open the throttle 1/4 and till the motor all the way down as to reading form from here and still have problem starting.....I was told that I should everytime when I finish with the boat should switch the fuel to off and run all of the gas out from the engine due to the 2 cycle oil build up..causing hard start.....is that true. But I notices that other day after two days of sitting.... before I took it out......it took me less that 10min to start the engine and ran ok with the water hose hook up to it at home.....but than when I got to the boat in the water it took me almost 15min to get the boat start again...but im confuse case it start ok at this house.... once motor start it ...start fine all day until it sit for more than two days......gosh it driving me crazy....any suggestion will be great......

Your 84 has chokes that must be used while cranking the engine till it starts.

I believe my choke is on the ignition and is push down to choke......if holding down the choke too long would it flood the crab if it doesn't start or is there another choke somewhere i miss.
thank you

If you do not hold the chokes till the engine fires it will take a miracle to start it.

Thank's I'll try it and see what happen......any idea why it start better out of the water than in the water? One more thing....about running the engine until it runs out of gas when finished with the boat to clear out any fuel and oil from the engine...will this help on the starting too.....any suggestion.

If you're running decent fuel, it shouldn't make any difference whether you run the fuel out or not, unless you're storing it for a month or longer.

This engine is almost impossible to flood when it's cold. On my 88 XR4 I hold the key in (choke button) for about 5 seconds, advance the throttle, then hold it in and crank until it starts. It shouldn't take more than 10 seconds on the first start. Should be instant if the engine is warm at all.

I have found that the motor starts best if it's level with the water. That's a little out from fully trimmed in. Either way off level causes the level of fuel in the float chambers to be off.

The starter motor is designed for 15 - 30 second bursts of operation, with many minutes (5 or more) of cool down between bursts. If you crank long, you're hurting it big time. Cranking speed is critical for a crisp start. If it is a little slow, it'll not get enough spark to start. On this engine spark comes totally from rotation of the flywheel over the stator, not from the battery.

Both starting and running will be different in the water than running on the muffs because there is a little back pressure on the exhaust when the motor is in the lake that isn't there on the muffs. That's why you set your idle speed at the lake.

hope it helps

Re: 1984 150 Black max V-6 hard starting

If changing your cold start procedure does not solve your cold starting problems, you might consider confirming that the "choke" is actually working correctly on your motor.

I am not famililiar with your particular motor year, but my 1996 150HP V6 uses an enrichener valve to "choke" the motor for cold starts. This valve allows extra fuel to run into the carbs when the choke (ignition key) is pushed in. If your motor's choke system uses an enrichener valve, you should confirm that it does provide extra fuel to the carbs when the choke (ignition key) is pushed in. The attached thumbnail shows my shop manual's troubleshooting guide for the enrichener valve on my motor. If your motor also uses an enrichener valve, this guide may help you out.

Alternatively, if your motor uses a butterfly (plate) in the carb throat to choke the motor when cold, you might confirm that the choke plate is closed when starting the motor when it is cold. The link and sync procedures in the manual for your particular motor will provide directions on how to adjust the linkages so the choke plate operates correctly.

Good luck
