So i am working on this 1984 mercury lower unit, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to disconnect the shift shaft from the engine. I am looking for the nut and the jam nut and cannot find it. Does this old of a motor not use that and where do i go to disconnect the shift shaft. I work on Yamaha and know them like the back of my hand. I told a friend that i could change him impeller and pressure test his lower unit. well, guess what i cannot get it to drop. it is hanging up on the shift shaft.

I believe it is a 1984 (he says) it was registered in 1986 (dealer says) i dont know the exact year and google is testing my patients right about now lol.

25HP Mercury Serial number is 0A728896

Thanks in advance everyone!

That s/n comes up as:

MERCURY - ( 25 H.P. (1987 ))
Serial No: 0A728896 Model No: 1025227

Parts Listing:

Mercury Parts, 18/20/25 H.P. (XD)

Once you determine if yours is electric or manual you can see the correct shift setup under one of these:

THROTTLE AND SHIFT LINKAGE (ELECTRIC)
THROTTLE AND SHIFT LINKAGE (MERCURY)(MANUAL)

Yes, you should be able to see the long shift shaft where it attaches to the coupler and you have to undo a bolt/screw to separate them.
Operate the shifter to locate the coupler where it meets the shift shaft.

Go here:

Small Engine Repair Reference Center Home

and scroll down to page 224 to (Merc 18, 20 [1986-oii] and 25). Read that and see Fig 3, yours should be similar.
