I have a 1984 30hp Johnson long shaft on a pontoon boat. It was out of the water for about 3 years.
I put muffs on with the garden hose and started it. Ran fine. Peed fine.
In the water it went. Started right up, idled fine and the tell tale pee stream was good. Accelerated fine and ran great for about 5 minutes at 1/2 throttle.
When idling back to dock an alarm came on continuously from the shifter console. My guess was overheat alarm. I let it sit at the dock for an hour or so.
It fired right up, idled fine and was peeing. After about 5 minutes running the pee was intermittent, then stopped followed by steam and the overheat alarm. I turned it off, waited a few minutes and restarted it. The tell tale pee was there then went intermittent, stopped, steamed.

I know the first thing you will say is to replace the impeller. BUT. What else can I look for ? I have to pay someone to put the boat in and take it out of the water.
Can I easily pull the lower unit to change the impeller while it is in the water? I want to know how far the lower unit must extend from the 'upper unit' to remove it. I can turn around the pontoon and tilt the motor up but the shore is there and is all muck so standing there would be like standing in quicksand (inland Michigan lake, all muck bottom). If the lower unit only has to come off a few inches before removal, I can probably do it. If the lower unit (long shaft outboard) has to slide off a couple feet, I think I'm screwed...
Any input would be helpful.
PS before the boat was put in the water I replaced the rubber pee tube from the powerhead and know for sure the output device that squirts the water is fine, no obstructions. It does pee well for a few minutes before getting prostrate trouble ....

You can tilt the motor up and pull the lower unit. Removal of the lower unit is a must to repair the water pump.
The thermostat may be bad if the motor alarms when you have a good tell tale stream. "A tell tale stream only tells you if the water pump is pumping."
A OEM manual is a must when working on motors. They can be found at ebay and kencook.com.

You can do it. I do it all the time especially on pontoons cause the owners never have a trailer. Just be carefull not to drop any bolts in the lake. Turn the boat around so stern is as close to shore as you can get it.

You may have a piece of broken Impellar in there also if its intermitent...causing a blockage some where...you will know when you take the LU off to do the water pump....

Don't drop and of the bolts in the water is all...lol....pocket them as they come off...4 bolts and the rear stud nut....bring the lower end to shore and rebuild it there...lol...

don't loose the black plastic compression ferrule thing on the shift shaft or the top nut also...they have to come off to drop the LU .....they are in the water intake behind the screens....

its a easy job..just doing in the water has it's downs....OOOOPs

Where is the thermostat located? Is it easy to replace ?
Also, how far out do I have to slide the lower unit to remove it?

The thermostat is located in the top of the cylinder head, you have to remove the cylinder head cover to replace it. If you are loosing the pee stream it is most likey the water pump. The pee stream is ahead of the thermostat.
The drive shaft will come out with the lower unit so look at the distance from the lower unit to the power head and thats how far it will have to drop in order to remove the lower unit.

You will need about 2 feet of clearance to drop the lower unit.

Here is a picture of where that ferule is, under the top shift nut. It has a vertical slit in it that you can spread with your fingernail or a small screwdriver. Getting wet doing this job ought to keep you cool:D

the nut on the top of the ferrule comes off too...take it off before you try to pull the lower unit off..or it will go for a swim...lol

Re: 1984 30 hp Johnson impeller replacement questions

Thanks for the picture and note about the nut going for a swim .

I have model J30ELCRR which I'm told is a 1984. Does anyone know what impeller number I would need and where is the best on-line place to get one, or the kit as it may be?
Also, is any brand names better than others? I want to get a good one if I can...

I'm not near the boat at the moment so I can't look. Can I easily remove the head cover to get at the thermostat?

Thanks for the info so far.

I wouldn't worry about the thermostat until you replace the water pump and see if that doesn't correct your problem.
The impeller is 395289, you can probably order right here on iboats.

When taking off the lower unit, do you have to put it in gear? Also, Are all the bolts that have to be removed located in the lower unit or is there some under the cowl or anywhere else? Sorry for the questions...I`m going to attempt to pull the lower unit off my boat also.

Re: 1984 30 hp Johnson impeller replacement questions

I usually put it in forward, that way I can rotate the prop to align the splines on the drive shaft when I install the lower unit.
There are not any bolts under the cowel, just on the lower unit. Don't forget the shift linkage.
