1984, 35 HP Evinrude Starter Problem

Starter keeps running after motor starts. To keep it from running I must pull the fuse at the starter solinoid, or turn the ignition off. I rebuilt the starter a few weeks ago and I'm sure I have the solinoid wired correctly.

I'll try to explane how it's wired.

The solinoid has two large posts, one at 12 0'clock, and one at 6 O'clock, and two small posts on the side facing the rear, 1 at 2 O'clock and 1 at 4 O'clock.

The battery and two other red wires go to the large 12 O'clock post.
The large 6 o'clock post is grounded.

A red/yellow wire is connected to the small 2 O'clock post.
a black wire is on the small 4 O'clock post.

Is this correct and if so what is my problem?? I'm guessing it's the solinoid but not sure.

Thanks for any help.

If pulling the fuse stops the starter from running, it obviously is receiving power to that small ungrounded terminal. Pulling the fuse breaks the power feed. So, what is feeding it? My guess is the ignition switch. Especially since turning it off stops the starter.

You need to verify all this with a voltmeter. Should be no voltage on either of those small terminals when you are not holding the key to the start position.

Hey, I just re-read your hookup. The large post should not be grounded. It should go to the starter. In fact the starter won't run if it isn't connected. Must be a mistake in yuor description.

You are correct on both counts. The bottom wire goes to the starter. And the problem was the ignition switch. Last week I noticed that the nut that holds it in place was loose, and I must have overtightened it. Yesterday after I posted this and couple beers and a brainstorm, I did the meter tests you mentioned and found the switch was sticking in the start position. I loosened it a bit and it worked..

Thanks
