Motor is 1984 60 hp ser#06549972 model ELPT. Motor had not been ran for sevral years. When started it was apparent water pump was bad. Replaced and it works fine. May have been ran hot. It starts fine on trailer. Compression on cylinders are within 10%. Installed new plugs.
When first started it fires right up. Acclerated to about 1500 RPM under load. When throttle is advance the engine quits. I have pushed the chock a couple time and it would then open up. Couple pumped the throttle and it opened up.
After running for a while it becomes very hard to start and idle. Had to drag it onto trailer because it would fire up, but would not idle or run.
I would appreciate any advise.

Any time a engine sets the carbs need to be serviced, remember you mix fuel and oil together and as it sets the fuel evaporates but the oil does not forming a gum and varnish. Pull the carbs and install new inlet needles and gaskets and also replace the fuel pump diaphram...

I removed carbs and cleaned them. Actually they were very clean. Used air to blow out holes that I could. Did not completely disasemble. Connected hose to fuel pump and cranked engine with starter. It pumped more gas than motor could have used if running. Running it would have pumped much more.
Could the timing or other setting cause thhis issue? It stops as if the key was turned off when accelerated. Just thought it may be carbs since using choke couple short burst made it accelerate. When motor was running it was smooth, at idle or when it did acclerate. But as the day went on it got to where it would not start, and if it did it would not idle.
