Ok guys, I screwed up. I left my key on for 2 days and now my motor won't fire. I have fuel and a little spark. I don't think I'm getting enough spark. Any advise is greatly appreciated. Btw. I'm new to all of this, including the forum so be nice.

The ignition coil is also hot to the touch, is this normal?

Check your points, they could be damaged. Recharge battery, coil's are usually hot after running a few minutes, or cranking for a few minutes.

Ok, I checked the points and they looked pretty good but I lightly sanded them to be sure. Still no go!! It might be usefull to know that I believe the fuel pump might of ran until the battery died and there seems to be some gas in the bottom of the boat. I took out all of the plugs and let it air out for 2 days before trying it again tonight. I have spark but it just doesn't seem to be consistent or strong enough, if that makes sense.

Did you charge the battery? Just because the engine turns over doesn't mean that there is enough voltage to get it to fire. Not sure why the fuel pump would be running for 2 days with the key on and the motor not running. I think I'd try to address the fuel in the bilge issue before I tried cranking it over. I'm not sure about your motor but on many the pump will only prime with the key on.

The battery is fully charged. I'm leaning more towards the cap and rotor or the coil. Thank you for all of the advise.

Hold on now...
The AQ125 had a mechanical fuel pump. Please explain yourself.

You have gas in the bilge? and your messing with spark!

In theory, a stock AQ125 properly wired up with key left on, nothing should be damaged.
Battery would have gone dead in one day if it is 'normal' size, not some giant sailboat battery.

How are you checking spark? with timing light connect to the boat battery for power , and clamp on #1 plug wire?

If gas in the bilge does not scare you, then try using starting fluid spray can CAREFULLY before spending any more time on the ignition.

Dennis you sound concerned. I drained and flushed the little bit of fuel out of the bilge before I did anything else. I know I have plenty of fuel so the starting fluid won't help at all. Yes, I was using a test light. Well actually my friend was using his. Anyways I believe I have this narrowed down to the ignition coil. I will update after I install the new one.

You might want to rethink what dennis is saying. Key left on has nothing to do with fuel in the bilge. You have a significant fuel leak that needs to be addressed. It's good that you've purged the fumes and gas from the engine compartment, but they will be back soon until you resolve the fuel leakage problem.

The issue with starting fluid is that you should be able to get ignition, even with a weak spark or incorrect fuel/air mixture. Once you get it running, then some problems will be easier to troubleshoot. I believe his recommendation is valid. Just don't go overboard with it.

If replacing the coil is enough to get it running, that's great, but you still need to resolve the fuel leakage issue.

IF??? the key's left on, and the points are closed you can burn up the condenser.
The coil if it's so hot you can't keep your fingers on it??
Then it's probably bad.
It gets hot but not so hot you can't keep your fingers on it.

Replace the points and cond.

What voltage do you have going into the coil? Should be 9v.
You have an inline resistor. If the voltage is above 9v to the coil the resistor might be the problem.

What color spark are you getting?
Ignition parts are cheap, well except for that
cap, so just change 'em all out. I threw in the hot spark electric ignition kit instead of points, been going strong for years.
If you have a hot spark, I'd give it a shot of a starting fluid. If it works, tells you a lot. If it doesn't work, tells you a little too.

Hey Jerry! Glad to see you're still holdin' it down over here! 🍻

Thanks for all of the advise. The coil was bad. I replaced it and it fired right up.
The question I have now is, while I'm driving at Wot the motor wil occasionally hesitate and I will lose rpm but I can run at 3/4 with no issues. Should I start a new thread for this??
