I got my motor tore down and had the power head sent out to be rebuilt. I was just wondering if there are any tricks to putting it all back together when i get it back. Any tips or things to be carefull of. Whats a good break-in time for the motor? This is my first boat motor so im sure there's a ton of stuff i dont know, so any info at all would be great. Thanks.

Re: 1984 evin 150 Rebuild

i just finished rebuilding an 86 rude. (first time). theres plenty that know more than i, but here's my input.

a. do not even think about hooking up battery till ALL connections are complete.

b. do not do a 'test' startup with the flywheel lightly seated (You'll sheer the crankshaft alignment pin straight off)

c. time spent cleaning / tap and die / threads is time well spent.

d. follow the books order of reassembly closely.

e. almost all shortcuts you take will come back to bite you sooner than u think.

f. hope you took care of your gearbox while you had it all disassembled. Transferring all that new power through the gearbox is sure to highlight any weaknesses.

g. rotate the prop lightly to rotate the driveshaft when assembling the powerhead/lower unit.

h. only put the lower unit on with 1 bolt on each side, then be sure to inspect the shift-rod height, before full assembly.

i. if you even begin to think that your forcing something.....you are.

I didn't remove the lower unit. I just pulled the power head off with the motor still on the boat. There werent any problems with it before i started.

The only unusual thing on that OMC is the special gel seal which seals the two crankcase halves. You will want to follow the OEM service manual on it's application when you reassemble. The connecting rods have an up and a down side. You will want to run double oil (25 to 1) for the breakin period-10 hours total. From the service manual: First ten minutes: fast idle only. Next 50 minutes: up to 3500 rpm-make sure the boat is planing. Vary boat speed every 15 minutes. Second hour: Full throttle bursts up to 3/4 throttle. Full throttle permitted for 1-2 minutes, then back to 3/4 throttle. Next 8 hours: avoid full throttle running for extended periods. Change engine speed every 15 minutes. On any new powerhead, it is best to start with a new impeller, new thermostats, overhauled carbs and a new fuel pump-that way you know the new powerhead will run well right out of the box.
