Hi guys,
This problem has been ongoing since I bought the motor. Whenever I shift into reverse, all I hear is a clunking sound in the lower gearcase and the propeller does not spin. Initally I thought that the linkages under the cowl weren't adjusted properly but on closer looking they seem ok. Does this sound like a gearbox problem? Forward gear works fine.

are either of these motors hydro electric or selectric?

If so, does Neutral work?

if the answer to both is yes, then you have one of the following probs.
1. Soleniods in foot not working.
2. pump in foot not working.

see the post on Hydro electric oil in the list, it has 30 posts and most of it is about this sort of stuff. (and look for a topic I am just posting called "fixed Hydro Electric drive Johnson."

rgds

Frank

Franki,
Mine is just a standard E60TLCRE 2 stroke, 2 cylinder. Neutral is fine.

Disconnect the linkage and drop the leg off.
take the prop off and manually turn the driveshaft and try changing from forward to neutral and reverse, and back again, all the while turning the drive shaft. (I actually modified a socket extension so I could spin mine with a cordless drill so test it.)

You may have missing teeth on your reverse gear.. or alot of potential problems if moving the linkage manually to each extent doesn't engage reverse properly.

Drain the leg oil and look for metal deposites in there.. the odd little metal sparkel in the oil is normal wear and tear, but heaps of it is bad, so is bigger bits floating around in there.

I have always pulled my legs apart to inspect them when something happens like what you describe..

Just do it slowly, deliberatly and pay careful attention to how it fits together.. if you take it apart, look for damaged teeth on gears, worn or pitted journals, and any other signs of damage..

Of course your particular legs may have specific problems that I don't know of that may be causing the problem...

Check out this page: http://www.brokeboats.com/lowerunits.html

it goes into some smaller OMC lower units and even has a diagram and some good advice. (look at the links near the bottom of the page.)

good luck.

rgds

Frank
