Re: 1984 Evinrude 60 - not reversing
Disconnect the linkage and drop the leg off.
take the prop off and manually turn the driveshaft and try changing from forward to neutral and reverse, and back again, all the while turning the drive shaft. (I actually modified a socket extension so I could spin mine with a cordless drill so test it.)

You may have missing teeth on your reverse gear.. or alot of potential problems if moving the linkage manually to each extent doesn't engage reverse properly.

Drain the leg oil and look for metal deposites in there.. the odd little metal sparkel in the oil is normal wear and tear, but heaps of it is bad, so is bigger bits floating around in there.

I have always pulled my legs apart to inspect them when something happens like what you describe..

Just do it slowly, deliberatly and pay careful attention to how it fits together.. if you take it apart, look for damaged teeth on gears, worn or pitted journals, and any other signs of damage..

Of course your particular legs may have specific problems that I don't know of that may be causing the problem...

Check out this page:
http://www.brokeboats.com/lowerunits.html

it goes into some smaller OMC lower units and even has a diagram and some good advice. (look at the links near the bottom of the page.)

good luck.

rgds

Frank
