Hello. Just replaced the thermostat and gasket due to engine not getting up to temperature. New thermostat didn't make a difference in operating temperature though. Just went over the whole motor carb kit, impeller, leg oil etc. Starts good, runs well but I've only ran in a barrel haven't hooked it up to a boat and run at full throttle. The one thing I'm wondering is if the stat spring was weak would othe water unseat the stat? Putting it together it seamed the spring had lots of tension. I'm at a loss and would appreciate some ideas. The stat is down low in front of the cowl latch and clearance was such an issue I ended up removing the head to remove the water plate. I'm discouraged to think of doing it again. Thank you.

Removing the head is the way it is best done (t.stat cover and gasket on the work bench). The spring is a stiff one, so I wouldn't worry about it. Running at idle in a barrel (as is appropriate -- throttle up only in the lake) will give you a cold reading unless you run it for a long time. Incoming water temp is initially pretty cold.

Sounds like you have it right. Get an infrared tester to simplify, if you don't have one (measure at the top of the head).

My infrared tester was reading about 77F at top of head. Never tested the barrel water but I'm guessing about 40 - 50F. Thanks for your help. Will test again once I get it on a boat at wot. Rick.
