1984 Johnson 185, replaced stator and now it will not crank.

I helped a friend to replace his stator, it was not firing on the odd cylinder bank, I switched the wire going from the even bank power pack to the odd bank power pack and it went to firing, so I figured it was the stator. I had the flywheel off for him and he actually replaced the stator and put the flywheel back on. He said he was sure that he lined the key way back up. the motor ran before even though it was only firing on the even cylinders, now all cylinders getting fire, but the motor will not run. it will pop every now and then. It sounds like it is out of time maybe. I double checked to make sure we put the wires from the stator to each power pack and they are correct. The wire from the front of the motor is going to the even bank.
any suggestions on what could have went wrong??? thanks in advance for any help. Sparkie

You can check the timing by using a timing light to verify #1 (or #2) firing on the top of the flywheel at the pointer. If it's off, you may find it may be misfiring if the key sheared. These keys shear easily if the flywheel nut is not torqued to the right spec, or if the taper on the flywheel and crank has any rust/debris on the mating surfaces-not unusual for an older engine. When you have it apart, lap the flywheel to make sure the mating surfaces are perfectly smooth and torque the flywheel nut to 140-145 lbs.
