Overheat alarm will warn you of an issue. It will stop if you ignore it when the motor seizes up and melts things !!!! then you will need either your trolling motor, paddles or towing in.

when you hear an alarm STOP, and find out why!!!!!!!! not stopping can be very costly.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. I understand that if the engine is overheating I need to switch it off ASAP but if the alarm was faulty and went off when the engine wasn't overheating would it stop/stall the engine electronically (In other words is there an inbuilt protection device that would force the engine to shut down) Many thanks.

Nope, all the sensor in the head does is ground out causing the horn to sound, won't stop anything else, it's quite a simple system.
