I replaced the OMC Stringer Outdrive on my 1984 Mark Twain with power steering with a 1979 Stringer outdrive from a boat without power steering. Now the boat steers opposite from the direction you turn the wheel. Nothing else was changed. Power is a 3.8 6 cyl. GM. Can I reverse the lines on the cylinder or the actuator to solve this problem? The steering is the rack and pinion type. Or is there some other cause, other than that the boat shifts good and throttles good. Nothing inside the boat was changed. The boat was put in the water to test it.

Welcome aboard John Bo:

I moved your question over to the OMC forum to see if we can get some answers. I've never dealt with power steering, so I'm not going to be much help. Did you do anything with the helm up front?

BTW - all caps is considered yelling in a forum. Upper and lower case letters and punctuation really help out reading your questions.

Did a little bit of lookin' ... are you sure you've got Power Steering? I don't see a power steering option for the stringer in my manual. It's either mechanical or tru-course.

About the 1984 Mark Twain with a stringer out drive that was replaced with a 1979 stringer out drive, that now steers opposite direction to wheel direction. The steering is controlled by a spur gear on the intermediate housing inside the boat, with a smaller spur gear on the stringer unit. This gear turns a shaft with a worm gear that meshes with a worm wheel that turns the exhaust housing cover. That in turn moves the stringer. Because the worm gear and the worm wheel have slanted teeth, they only work one way. My question is did OMC make two different applications of gears? Where can I find this out? My manuals do not show options. I tried flipping the worm wheel but it only fits one way. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thank you!
