The engine starts then starts to die out. When priming the bulb, gas squirts out of the carb. Does thuis mean that the needle is not seated and allows gas to go around the needle?

I reckon you have the answer. Either the float valve is not seating correctly, the float level is set incorrectly or the float is leaking and filling with fuel so not floating. A quick peep into the carb should lead you down the right path.
Good luck.
Andy

It's a 1984 9.8 merc and how doyou measure the float level? I shook the float and there was no gas inside. can you replace the seat and needle or just the needle? The needle was clean but how do you clean the seat?

It is thier website: abm.com or something like it. to find it, enter "mercruiser parts" in a search engine.
