My drive belt squeaks and I've tightened it as far as possible with the alternator adjusting bracket. I want to put a new belt on. I know I need to unbolt the front motor mount in order to replace the belt but what is the exact procedure? Should I put a bottle jack in the bilge area to support the engine and lift it the small amount of space that I need in order to remove old belt and slide the new one through? Will lifting (or lowering-whatever you tell me) cause any damage to the transom seal or transmission?
Thanks to all!

Sorry I forgot to ask if it's necessary to use an official Mercury belt, or can I get a belt at Autozone for a 2.5 litre GM motor?
Thanks!

If you have a small floor jack you can put it under the engine with a piece of wood under the ront of the oil pan. All you need to do is support it, not lift it. If i remember correctly you only have to take the bracket of that is on the starboard side of the mount. There are two long bolts that you take out and then a small spacer. I think thats right, although if i'm wrong don't shoot me :)
As far as the belt goes, you can take your old one to napa and match it up, or see if they can cross the mercury numbers.
57-64032A 1 Without Power Steering
57-69143Q With Power Steering

Good luck,
justin@sterndrive.cc
www.sterndrive.cc

Thanks Jason-I bought an official QuickSilver belt for $20.00 and am going to put it on tomorrow (or at least try to!). I did look at the existing belt on there and it is very different from the QuickSilver one as it has ribbed inside while the QuickSilver one is smooth. I looked at the bracket that you spoke of and it looks like the 2 bolts and spacer should give enough room to slide the new one on.
Thanks for the info!
