Hello,

I am a 1st time boat owner with some questions. I have not been able to get the engine started. I dont have a manual but there is no alternator and I dont know what a stator is. I replaced cap rotor and wires and there is spark at the coil. I am getting fuel and the motor sounds like it wants to start but just isnt kicking over. It wont start with starting fluid and feels ignition related. There is also a wire coming off the starter that looks like a ground wire but I have no reference. I have tried some earlier posts but the links have all been error messages when I try them. It is a 4 cyl motor and looks to be intact other than alternator. Will it run on battery alone anyway? Any advice would be appreciated.

You have what is commonly called a "470" motor It will run on the battery if everything is adjusted correctly. Avoid using starting fluid, it has a nasty habit of breaking pistons.. Manual 8 is what your looking for.

The 'alternator' is built as part of the balancer. The coils are bolted to the front cover of the engine inside the balancer, which has magnets glued to it. The output current can't be controlled. The alternator output goes to a water cooled voltage regulator, under the front end of the exhaust manifold. Excess current is dumped off as heat... The systems works, until the magnets delaminate from the inside of the balancer, or the coils rot out from a salt-water bath, or the regulator becomes a smoke factory... At that point, the OEM system is usually ditched and an aftermarket kit is fitted, which gives you a 'conventional' alternator, driven by a belt.
