I need some help and have no idea where to start. I recently got a FREE 1984 Scorpion 215 Mer-cruiser MCM-228 (305) I/O, and it has been sitting for about a 1 1/2 years. I first could not get the engine to turn over, put in a new starter and now it turns over but now I have no ignition and it doesn't seen to be getting fuel to the carb either. I changed the fuel filter but not sure if I need to change the mechanical fuel pump also? As for the ignition part, I have no idea where to start with that. I don't want to change everything out new and still not be the problem. I could use some guidance any help would be appreciated. Thanks

first, welcome aboard

second, you need to service the points. you need to file them, gap them, verify the dwell, then set timing. no way to get it to start unless you do this.

third, since it sat for 1.5 years, you need to clean the fuel system, this may include scrubbing the tank, cleaning the AS valve, and pulling the carb apart to clean it.

4th, you need to do a complete drive service including raw water pump, bellows, alignment and u-joint check

5th, do all other maintenance per the mercruiser factory manual that you need to do

6th, being a 1984 boat, you need to check the transom and stringers for rot. most likely you will find you need a complete restoration. Free boats are the most expensive

7th, prior to doing anything, you need to get the boat registered in your name.
