I'm thinking that an '84 was a brown band, not a blue band. Is the shift in the handle or on the side of the motor? If in the handle, you should be sure to idle all the way down before shifting and shift it quick to avoid boogering up the clutch dog and having reverse gear go out. Other than the lousy plastic connectors on the shifting stuff, and the shift in the handle itself, they're good motors. $600 isn't bad if it's in good shape.
GOod luck and I hope you got a good one,

the shift is on its side...i ain't had it out yet but i might have been got...i had it running in a trash can and when i put down to shift its dies out and it i guess backfires out the exhaust and i know your not post to rev it hard without load but i put in gear then floored it an it sounds like a tick tick tick noise uh i say coming up from the top im going out tomorrow and man i hope it runs good i have been getting screwed over every way i turn:(

By your info., I'd say it's an early 70's motor. They're good engines, but hopefully yours is a '76 or later and it has a stainless driveshaft. If yours is a '72 or '73, which is what I suspect, you'll be lucky if the lower unit is in good shape. You're going to have to post some very descriptive symptoms of what your motor is doing on the mercury forum and let the real experts there help you. My mercury knowledge is very limited. It does have some expensive electrical parts on it. Post the model # from the ID plate above the transom screws or on the side of the transom clamp so they'll know what year model you have.
GOod luck,

BTW,
Your motor may just be lean sneezing and in need of a carb. cleaning (no big deal), and the ticking may just be the recoil pawls tapping on the flywheel (common). Don't get riled yet, be patient, and likely you can fix it.
