I have an 84 merc that loses power on the top end, accelerates slowly and won't start in idle neutral or idle in neutral. The engine will only start in neutral forward with throttle up and must be slammed forward to prevent it from stalling. Once running it wont achieve top end. I changes the carbs, fuel pump, filter, diaphram, cables, fuel lines, tank, spark plugs, tuned the engine, checked for air in the fuel line and spark on the plugs. Everything seems fine, she just won't run well. Any Ideas?

Have you done a compression check on the motor. If not then check the compression.

Hi, McCarthy.

You sure changed a lot of stuff. Bet it cost a lot. What made you think those parts were bad?

Please don't be offended, but your objective is to find out what is wrong, not to send the dealer's son through Law School.

Don't buy anything else until you know what's broke.

First, take Down South's excellent advice. Then, if you don't have one get a manual.

Then, let us know what you have found.

Good luck. :)
