1984 Stingray--Dies when giving throttle

Hey guys, we recently purchased a 1984 Stingray with a Mercruiser 140. The boat is immaculate (1 owner and only 285 hours).

I put in the water today and it was the first time it has been put in this year. I was told by the previous owner that he has it regularly serviced and it really shows....all original, perfect seats and carpet etc...

The boat will crank and idle. It will shift in and out of gear. When you give it the throttle it will die. I can keep it from dying by feathering the throttle back and forth and it will pick up. We used today for several hours doing this but obviously it is not right.

Can you please make some suggestions?

Thanks

It's not that difficult and I think Bondo nailed the problem. Be sure and get your numbers (Motor - carb). I'm not sure what's out there, but the OEM Merc Carb kit that I did - kit was $75!

Please Read This Before Posting A Question... How to Ask a Question....

Merc have been using the GM 3 litre block since forever... Give us a serial number and we can point you in the right direction for a carb rebuild kit...

Guys, I appreciate the feedback. I am not handy when it comes to engines...So not sure I would venture to try this myself...What can I expect to pay someone?

Thanks

Personally, I'd take it to a carb specialist, not a marine workshop... If you just remove the carb, that will make it all that much easier...

From someone who just rebuilt a carb for the first time-I suggest taking pictures of how everything goes together before taking it apart-especially the linkages. It makes things easier and gives you peace of mind when putting it back together.
