I am having lower unit problems, as long as the gear shift is in nuetrul or forward the prop will not turn and then when I place it in reverse it will spin.

Observe the direction of the shift linkage on the motor when shifting. Disconnect the shift cable from the engine. Manually move the shift linkage to put the engine in forwatrd gear (Use care to avoid the spinning prop!). If it works the problem is in your shift cable setup. If not post back.

Re: 1984 Suzuki DT75

I have had a mechanic take a look at the lower unit and it is bad.
I found a used one much cheaper than the outboard shop wants to charge for itbut I don't know if the water pump is good in the cheap one the mechanic says that the water pump is new in the one that he has.

Buy the cheaper one and install a new water pump yourself. Since the lower unit is already off, most of the water pump work is already done. The impellers aren't expensive. Then you wil know how to do it in 2 years when its due again. Compare the cost of a new impeller kit plus the cheap lower unit to the cost the dealer wants to charge.

I replaced the lower ubit with a used one, when I put the prop back on it rubbed the housing.
My question is it ok to put a washer in front of the thrust bushing. I did replace the thrust bushing with a new one.

I would think that if you have the proper lower unit and the correct prop there shouldn't be any rubbing. Are you sure that you have the correct bushing and prop?

Re: 1984 Suzuki DT75

The lower unit is a used one that the repair shop obtained for me, The prop is the one that came off the original, The bushing I purchased new from a Suzuki dealer.
the Mechanic told me that Yamaha and Suzuki did that all the time he gave me a small stainless steel washer and told me to place between the prtop and the trust washer.
