Totally broken hearted. My little pontoon I work and play off of is making squeaky noises. I dropped the lower unit and all seems fine, grease looks almost like new, not even cloudy. Before I even cranked it for the season I cleaned the fuel system completely... cranked it up and it runs the BEST EVER! Took it out for a ride across the lake and back, got almost home when it bogged down as if out of gas.... found a leaky fuel line connector. Fixed that. It still starts easy and runs strong. Sad thing is that the squeaky noise seems to be turning into a knocking noise. I gave the flywheel a little turn back and forth and seems there is a little play on at least one piston (no I have not yet checked compression). Before I get serious into the power head I checked for availability of parts. Looks like the only ring set/piston I can get is .020 over and I don't see connecting rods listed anywhere should I need one. When and if I do tear down the power head I want to know I can readily get the parts to put it back together.... anybody got a source for the connecting rod? Any good tips to confirm this is the problem before I dig into it?

The crank and rods are a pressed together assembly. so you cannot replace rods yourself
I sent off my old crank that just needed mains
$435 plus shipping for my 1999 C40 3 cylinder
They said new mains, big end rod bearings, seals between cylinders, made sure rods were good, and polished up all surfaces
Not sure what core charge would be if your old is not good enough.

Thanks for the reply 99yam... for that price I can pick up a running old merc or johnson so may just do engine swap.... I've got several old 50 hp motors that are still worth keeping out of the scrap pile.

If you could locate and purchase another motor very similar to yours but in good running condition then you could just keep your old motor for parts.....if you can find a good 30 year old motor like yours it might be fairly cheap$$$....then fix it up some.....
