I have a 1985, 150 evinrude xp, sitting on a 18 1/2 Crestliner. The motors sat unused for 2 years. I took it out on the lake today to give it a test run and needed ether to get it started and it ran rough. I hade someone on the lake pace me and I maxed her out at around 28 mph. When I returnded home I took a hard look under the cowling and noticed 1 of the plug wires was off the plug, but looked like it was on. I pulled the plugs and found them to be all carboned up. I removed the screws for the high-speed jets and sprayed carb cleaner in them.
Anyway my questions are these:
Generally speaking if this motor is running properly what kinda speed should I be getting out of it, my thought was around 50 mph?
Should I be able to see clear through the jets when the screws are removed on both sides?
If giving this thing a tune-up what do I need aside from the plugs and plug wires?
Thanks for the help,

Daner

Welcome!!

The carbs need to come off and be soaked. Theres more to cleaning them that the jets. Its an easy job, you just have to get them apart to do it right.

I'm kinda surprised you didnt score a piston.

Thanks DHadley for the input. I did as advised and took the carbs off and cleaned them, they looked real good but I soaked them anyway, why not after taking the trouble to pull them apart. I didn't mention in my original post that I did empty the gas tank completely and filled it with all new gas and had also emptied the oil and put in all new oil, I even used Cen-Pe-Co, which isn't cheap by a long shot!
