Hello,
I have been having a bad sneeze on acceleration after warm up. Pulled the flywheel, inside of flywheel rubbed and stator coils rubbed.
I have attached pics. What would be causing this? Plate is tight. Also, should the flywheel be able to go down the spindle more and be flush or are the pics correct. It had not sheared a key yet. Thanks for any insight.

"What should be causing this....." Well, the flywheel should be fully seated down on the crankshaft. The coils will be adjusted with their mounting screws so that Surface A is the same as Surface B (pay no attention to the bad cracked coil). Your coil(s) are mounted so that Surface A is sticking over Surface B....and are hitting the flywheel. Be sure to check BOTH sides of each coil....

Hard for me to tell if the coils are flush or not by the pictures. However that certainly is the first thing to check. There is another possibility though. The crankshaft main bearings may be shot. Grab hold of the shaft and attempt to move it fore and aft. Any movement should be barely perceptable, like a couple of thousandths of an inch. Any more than that, the shaft and flywheel is moving back and forth, allowing the magnets to hit the coils. Adjusting the coils won't fix worn out bearings. BTW, loose bearings will also cause sneezing and poor running.

Also check that the stator plate doesn't wobble.

Re: 1985 20 hp Evinrude Flywheel hitting stator coils

Thanks guys for a starting point. I will check for those things today and report back.

History- bought this engine for $300- thought maybe it just needed a carb job. Decided to pull the head to inspect after getting low compression on cyl #2- saw the damage. Very deep scoring on cyl and piston. Must have run lean? overheated bad. Waterpump housing was even burnt! Decided to just swap for a good powerhead.
This is a powerhead that I purchased that was rebuilt by a local machine shop. What has been done so far:

New waterpump and housing
New coils
new plugs
new plug wires
rebuilt carb
rebuilt fuel pump
rebuilt manual primer
all new fuel lines
new tank and hose
ethanol free gas 89 oct 50:1

Not sure of:
power pack
stator
sensor
charge coil

Checked when I got home today and everything is tight, no wobbles on anything at all. All the coils are very flush or even within a bit deeper back than flush. What I did notice was the sensor had black hard goo leaking around it and on the plate and noticed it was also stuck up inside the flywheel. I will have to clean that off.

I test ran the motor in a barrel the other day after having it all put back together. Idled fine, started sneezing and popping once I gave any throttle. Pulled the brand new plugs and they were black and very oily, but it wiped right off.

Also, I am wondering what purpose does the harness have that has a plug on the end of it, but is just tied to the side. (see pic) The 3 yellow, yellow gray, yellow blue wires, are the only ones connected to the stator. If those are the only ones connected to the stator , what purpose does the stator have in this ignition?

It's for charging the battery.

It's for charging the battery.

So, if I were not concerned with charging the battery, would I be able to just remove the stator coils altogether, since it is the cause of the flywheel hitting it?

The rectifier should moumt in the hole above where it is laying and the coils should be adjusted to clear the flywheel. Doing this should and as others has stated cure your troubles. JMO

Yes, you can remove the charge coils for the charging system. They have a fair bit of value as a lot of people wish to have that capability for running lights, bilge pump, etc. Only remove the coils related to the charging system. The sensor and ignition coil remain...

What is the expected clearance of stator assembly? My older model of the same outboard family has a decidedly different stator assembly, but as the mounting is shown in EPC there should not be much room for adjustment. Could the assembly be a wrong part from a different engine?

No - your armature plate looks to be stock. It is hitting for a reason. It HAS to be one of the above reasons. Something is either loose, out of adjustment or worn.

Thanks again to all for all the help. I will be out of town until the 15th Dec. and will not be able to work on it further until then. Everyone have a great Holiday!

Re: 1985 20 hp Evinrude Flywheel hitting stator coils

Hello again to all. Thanks for all the previous advice. I got back home the other day and removed the charge coil assembly alltogether. Everything is smooth now. Don't really need to charge a battery. Ready to put back together and test.

Another question: What is the best way to hold a toothed flywheel to be able to torque the nut correctly?

I use a flywheel spanner to hold the flywheel when torqueing the flywheel nut. Some auto stores have them that they loan out to customers. Otherwise place a large screwdriver in a tooth and againest the starter mount casting should work. JMO
