Hi. I have a problem with my tilt/trim on my 85 johnson outboard. At the end of last fishing season, I took my boat out for one last run and when I came back to the dock, I could not get the motor to lift up. I pulled the boat home and started checking wires. Found out my trim tabs were also not moving. I took the cover off of the motor, and hit the red switch to raise the motor and heard nothing but a clicking noise coming from a little black box in the back of the motor. It clicked when I pushed the button up and when I pressed the button down. Is this a fairly easy fix or should I have a professional look at it? What could be the problem so when or if I have to call a pro I have a general idea of what is wrong? Thanks for all of the help!

Re: 1985 235HP Tilt/Trim problem

The clicking indicates that the electrical system is at least functioning on a basic level. It would be simple if one or both of the trim relays was bad. PN 586224. They are not expensive and are easy to replace. I'd probably start there first. Inside the black trim box on the back of the block are two realys, one controls the up, the other controls the down. They are both identical. Swap the two and see if it makes any difference. If one of the solenoids is OK, it will power the trim motor in one direction, but both relays need to be in place for either to work-(to complete the circuit.) If one is bad, I'd replace them as a pair (set) and keep the older one as a spare. If the relays are not the problem, you will need to disconnect the trim motor lead/connector at the box and power it directly to see if the motor is ok.

Tried flipping the relay switches and that did not do anything. I still just hear the same clicking every time i hit the button up and down. Any other ideas that I could try?

Re: 1985 235HP Tilt/Trim problem

Well, tried the new relay switches. bought two and put both of them in right away. I tried up and down with the motor but still hear the same clicking noise. To better describe the "clicking" noise, I hit the red button for either up or down, and it's one single "click" and it just clicks for as many times as I hit the button. Is there any other ideas I could try?

you have a gree and blue wire from the TNT motor.put power directly to them,if you put pos.to blue ,it should lift the eng.green to pos lowers.if nothing happens, your TNT motor is fried. If it works, check every wire that goes to ground and power that deals with your TNT
