1985 25hp long shaft tiller - 2 stroke

I am having some problems with my boat motor. It will start intially fine. It will idle great and rev up and down while in idle. But under load it will shake and when you crank up the juice it will loose power. It won't stall but will loose all power and then a few minutes later will crank up again. It will do this over and over. I was told it was the coil or the CDI box. Is there away to trouble shoot at home to figure out which one it is?

Check compression, spark, and fuel. A manual for your motor will give you ohm readings and such for the coils. You may need to clean carb. Check for air leaks and restricktions in fuel lines, fuel pressure/ vacuum.
