Hi, I have been having a few problems with my 30 HP Evinrude motor. The first problem is while idling it will sometimes sputter once or twice and then go back to running normal. The second problem is sometimes when I will go to give the motor more throttle it will try to bog down and die. And the third problem has to do with the starter I think. The motor will crank just fine sometimes and other times I will have to take the motor cover off and tap on the starter to get it to engage otherwise I will just make a humming noise when I turn the key. So far I have cleaned the carb and added sea foam to the gas and also replaced the spark plugs. Does anybody have any ideas I can try? Thanks in advance.

The sputtering and bogging down are symptoms of something blocking the low speed jet in the carb. You will probably need to clean and rebuild the carb to get it to run right again. The starter probably needs to be dismantled and cleaned to get it to operate too. Has the boat been sitting for a while?

Thanks for the reply. I will try putting a new carb kit in it. I cleaned it up but did not put a new kit in. What all do I need to clean on the starter? The boat sat outside since last August up to about a month and a half ago. Where is the low speed jet located? Thanks

I just looked at a diagram of your carb and the low speed jet is adjustable. I for some reason was thinking of my 70 Johnson that isn't. Start your motor and turn the adjustment counter clockwise about a quarter turn at a time until it idles like it should. Is you look HERE you can see a blow up of your carb. The low speed adjuster is #25.
