Kia Ora!
I have a 30hp evinrude on my 14 foot tinnie. Goes great. It does seem to steam alot out the exhaust after a good long run. I bought it off the original owner who had never flushed it out all its life.
It pumps heaps of water, but the steam makes me think that the cooling water may not be doing its job. First thought is to remove or at least inspect the thermostat. On looking for the thermostat it appears that i need to remove the whole water jacket area by the plugs.
Just need a bit of advise in achieving this. Am I on the right track?
Cheers

Hot exhaust + cool water = steam. If your motor is pumping out water, and it's not overheating, I'd leave it alone.

thanks for your help... It does appear that I need to take off the water jacket over the head to get to the thermostat.

totally normal, especially coming off plane and submerging the exhaust tube. mine did that with brand new thermostats.

An easy test could be to let it warm up a minute and then feel the water coming out and if it feels warm chances are that it is doing its job. If it is cold then it is not cooling the engine.

I now have the gearcase off to do impellor. I don't think i'm going to put a thermostat back in. We live in quite a warm climate, and cant see any use for it. The engine never got flushed in it's whole life, so I think the more watrer the better. Agree?

wrong answer jeeves....
PUT A T-STAT IN IT!! it wont run worth a damn without it warm climate or not.....
and not having it in there will cause all sorts of fantom problems

if you want to do something productive for it take the head cover off and scrape the deposits out of the water jacket....

This thread was really helpful.I looked at another in regard to removing the gearcase to do the water pump impellor, and I forgot to remove the nut from the grear shift, to release the lower end. I made a mare of it. Now the driveshaft is out of the gearbox. Guess this means re-build the gearbox? The impellor is totally siezed to the driveshaft too! Help!

You shouldn't have to do anything about the lower unit do to the removal of the drive shaft. Put it back in and spin it and see if the propeller shaft moves if so you should be fine.
