1985 6 H.P. Johnson Carb Problems???

I am trying to get a 6 horse Johnson running that hasnt' ran for at least 8 years. I can get it to start and idle but when you try to speed up it starts to sputter and then dies. I think that it's just a dirty carb but not positive. If you have any ideas of what the problem is I would appreciate it if you could let me know. I was also looking for a detailed break down of the carb just in case I have to take it apart. Thank you in advance for any help.

For sure you need to tear the carb down and clean it thouroughly. A rebuild kit for the carb. would be a good idea, too.

if you don't use the kit, you're wasting your time. also change the impeller seeing it is probably a 21 y/o very dry piece of rubber waiting to clog the cooling system.
