I'm planning on mounting my new 1985 60 hp to my 15 foot orlando clipper. I'm no where near close to mounting it but I just kinda want to get an idea of the performance. I think it weighs at least 350-400 pounds but ill say 500 to be on the safe side. Honestly have no idea though....I just got a 1985 60 hp johnson off of craigslist and it came with a 11.25*19" prop. Now if i mount the motor and use the prop do you think it would be too much?

EDIT: I think it's an evinrude prop tooo....has the E looking M logo on it.

I couldn't find any info on Orlando Clipper but if its glass it probably every bit of 500 lbs.
You can probably expect 30 to 35 mph.
Your 19" prop will very likely be too much prop but when its time run it and get us the info in the stickys
at the top of the prop forum.

No performance issue i'm trying to correct just curious on possible performance.

I believe the prop manufacturer is evinrude, model?, stainless

11.25*19"

Average load? idk. Boat is aluminum though. Look at my signature

1985 johnson 60 hp, 2cylinder....What gear ratio does this thing have? By the way, i'm not sure whether it matters but the guy i bought the motor from said the lower unit was replaced because he hit some stump and his mechanic put on a evinrude case? gray bluish colored i think.

1962 orlando clipper 15 foot....350-400 i guess...

Re: 1985 60 hp prop question

According to my info The 60 has a 2.42 gear ratio. The 19" prop is the biggest available here at boats kind of indicates for a light fast boat I would consider your nice Clipper as an average size and weight.
When you get setup do some test runs and get us the info.
If you want to double check the ratio pull the plugs and turn it over by hand ,count the revolutions of motor for one revolution of the prop.
Calculator says at 5500 rpm a 19" prop at 10% slip will do about 36 mph.

lol 36mph? doesn't sound too bad :D Hopefully this motor will actually idle because the magneto in my mercury is on it's last leg lol.

When i do get the chance to mount it. At what height level should the AV plate be at? Even with the bottom of the boat? or 1 inch above the bottom of the boat?

Motor height isn't as cut an dried as that.I would start with it about even with the bottom
and raise it if you have no venting issues.Usually suggested that you should be able to glimpse
the anti vent plate at speed.
That 36 I quoted was if the motor can twist a 19 up to 5500.

I use a prop calculator I just searched "prop calculator" on google The one I use is a green page.
Can be helpful to tell if wot rpm and speed make sense. You have to keep in mind that it is only as accurate as the figures used.

I believe 85 was when they went to prop rated.Personally I don't think its easily measured its just a more accurate rating.

man, i can't get a clear answer as to when they went to prop rating lol........i still think 1986 is the first year because mercury dropped their 50hp to 45hp and the new 60hp had 3 cylinder instead of two..

idk. whatever i guess.

Re: 1985 60 hp prop question

2 cylinder Merc 40 went to 35 in 84-85.
My info says The 70 hp went to 60 in 84-85.
The 50 hp 4 cylinder did go to 45 in 86.
inline 6 was 90-115 82-86 and only 115 in 87,88.
The Evinrude 45 cube 2 cylinder motors no obvious changes through the " key years.
3 cyl. 60,70 hp has a displacement increase after 85. 55 & 60 prior to 89 are 49.7 cubes.
As you might imagine There are surely some motors that we're simply tweaked to make the rating.
It appears these changes came between 84 -86.
I think the change may have been agreed upon be members of the outboard association and not necessarily acted on at a specific date. And as I understand it Force never did change to a prop rating.

Anybody know what the torque specifications for the prop nut? there's a plastic spacer so i'm guessing not much.

Re: 1985 60 hp prop question

While there are torque specs I think about 55 ft lbs.
If you just make sure its snugged down good and locked you should be fine.

Yup, I made sure the cotter key was in the castle nut....Should be good to go. No play lol. Technically you only need the prop nut when you're going in reverse? :D

You got that right. Years ago I didn't tighten the set screw on my straight drive inboard, a couple a of weeks later when I put it in reverse the shaft backed right out of the coupling and stopped against the rudder.
