Have a 16ft bayliner with the 85hp force, I used to have a 13x19 pitch (still have it) but was told that that was way too big, so I now have a 13x17 on there now, the motor sounds like she is getting more rpms but now someone else told me that I may wanna go with a 13x15. Does anyone know for sure. The prop game is hard and costly. What was the original prop that came with these motors?

Thanks

Re: 1985 85hp prop question

The right way to go about it is to monitor your Wide open throttle ( wot ) rpm via a tach.
A simple and effective way is to get a tinytach.com for $40.
Without a tach, you are just guessing on if you need a different prop or not, and guessing which one to buy.

There generally are no "stock" props for motors over 40hp.
The same motor on a 16-17-18' boat would require a different prop. The load and the type of use also effects what prop you go with.

Re: 1985 85hp prop question

OK, second question as far as a tach goes. I have been contemplating on buying a tach, seeing that it seems fairly simple to hook up to my outboard. Do the standard teleflex models that they sell at Boatersworld (up to 7000rpm)be sufficient for my outboard.
Again Thanks

Re: 1985 85hp prop question

Your Force motor requires a tach for a 20 pole charging system. These are a little hard to find at local shops. If you do a google search, you can find it for $60.
Teleflex part number 53743P

click for tach

The tinytach is a small digital display unit, simply wrap the inductive pickup wire around a sparkplug wire.

Can get it for 39.95 plus shipping if you look in the right place. But its not that 8000 rpm teleflex unit.

Might get that tiny tach they will work.
