I picked up a pair of nice used 1985 9.9 HP Evinrude motors today, the one, which runs great, has all sorts of slop in the upper mounts, the other is super tight, but has a seized power head. Both are identical model motors.
How much hassle would swapping these be?
I take it pulling the power head is the easiest method?
I will already have the lower unit off for a new water pump impeller, so the drive shaft will be out of the way the shift rod will be disconnected.
I've not dealt with one of these newer motors yet, do I pull the power head or can I separate only the exhaust housing?
I'm guessing its a nasty job because two dealers told me that the cost of fixing them wouldn't be worth it for such old motors. It sounded to me like they didn't want or need the work.
The guy that had them said he's got the factory shop manual someplace, but he's got to dig for it a bit.
So I don't want to buy one just yet.
I ran the motor the other day on my boat, it runs great, it just flops around too much up top.
Any advise?
