I don't know much about outboards so here's my question: Whats a 1985 9.9 Gamefisher worth? And are they reliable. Seems like it's in good shape comes with metal gas tank and owner/parts manual. Are parts cheap are they availeble I heard they are, what is their weak points He's asking 450 I think i should haggle him down.

Re: 1985 9.9 sears Gamefisher

I had a 7HP gamefisher long ago and can say.. the HP rating is NOTHING close to what they claim, but it was quite reliable. I never gave it a tune up, never changed the plug, never even babied it (even jumped someone else's raft using it.. not on purpose). It just worked, always. Was light as a feather, as well.

I had a 6HP Mercury which was at least double it's size and more powerful, but I mostly used the little 7HP just because I never had an issue with it.

Oh, and I bought it for $75 15 years ago, so $450 today is just plain crazy, even if it is 3HP bigger.

They were reliable motors.Looking at todays economy,I would think you could definitely pay less. There are going to be alot of people selling their toys as they scale back.Thats a popular size motor and parts for it can still be found.Cash is king now and dont be afraid to walk away if he isn't willing to negotiate. There will be some sweet deals out there.

$450 is WAY too much for a 9.9 Gamefisher. Is this a Force or Eska based outboard. Either way the parts are hard to find and some of then no longer available NLA.

I bought a 7.5 HP Gamefisher (Force) that looked brand new for $400 2 years ago,,, outboards were selling for a lot more back them, bad economy  Anywho, this thing hauls a** for a 7.5 HP and I really like it. It's a de-tuned 15HP Force, like the 9.9 you are looking at,,, just de-tuned more. Problem comes in when you need to find parts. You can find easy things like impellers and plugs, but a lot of other things are NLA.

Reeds? NLA took me hours of scouring the internet to find them.

Ignition module/coil, BIM? NLA, had to get a $150 aftermarket conversion kit to fix 1 bad $30 coil.

If this is an Eska based Gamefisher I would walk away, underpowered and hard to find parts for. I also had a 1970's 7.5HP Gamefisher (Eska) and it was a pig compared to the 1988 7.5HP Gamefisher (Force).

If you need to take it to a shop for repair I've heard most places won't touch an Eska or Force, another reason to stay away.

No good years for Eska's as the main problem with them is finding parts.

BTW, I paid $150 for the 7.5HP Eska I had 6-7 years ago and it was in very nice condition. If he's asking $450 I doubt you are going to buy it for a reasonable price.

Okay He's also got a 90's 8hp Yamaha for sale 600 bucks, I could maybe move him down a little, It come with a new tank and was recently serviced, here's the stich it was used in salt water and the lower unit looks a little rusty I could paint it I Guess but I don't if the salt water would cause any internal problems, it was serviced recently and he claims it runs nice, thanks.
