Hello Guys:

I am used to Mercury inline 6 and 4'sthat have the choke, but have never started one with the enricher valve. What is the best way to start one cold? Crank and bump the valve till it starts? Bump the valve a couple of times and then crank?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Craig

I press the key in to "choke" a couple of times, move my fast idle just a little, press in and hold key to "choke" and crank. Subsequent starts generally require just a bump to "choke" to start. 82 Mercury 90 HP I6. These things love fuel, don't they?LOL

Yes, that's what I did with my 79 that had a choke. The 85 doesn't have a choke, it has a valve that sprays fuel directly into the crankcase, bypassing the carbs.

OK, sorry, missed the mariner info! My enricher valve sprays into the carb throat.

I make sure the bulb is nice and hard, increase idle speed to 1500 RPM range, then choke on the first crank, if she catches then stalls I use choke it for just for a second or two on the second try, sometimes not at all.(each lady is a bit different, see what is best for yours) If you hold it in too much she won't start. If she is properly linked and synced and timing is correct, she won't need another choke unless she's sat for more than 15 minutes.

Thanks for the advice, and it would be correct IF she had a choke. She is the first or second year with the enricher valve instead of a choke.

My recommendations are based on my 115hp 1984 i-6, it also has the enricher. You use them in the same fashion as a choke. A traditional choke just reduces air flow creating a rich mixture, an enricher just dumps fuel into the crank case creating a rich mix. Same outcome, just different way to get there. The enrichers are supposed to be more reliable and have less moving parts. Again, you operate either in the same fashion- with both styles if you use too much she won't start. One you get that rich mix going into the crank you should be good to let off....
